Pet import requirements for the United States vary by country — mainly based on where your dog has been and where it was vaccinated, since cats face no federal rabies-vaccination requirement at all regardless of origin. This guide is a directory for this site’s entire route library: browse by difficulty, region, or CDC pathway risk, or jump straight to the full country table.
Current as of 2026: Figures below are this site’s own editorial estimates, based on federal requirements and airline research current as of each guide’s own last update — always confirm current rules directly with CDC before you travel.
How to Use This Guide
- Find your country — search the table below, or use one of the “Browse by” sections to narrow it down by difficulty, region, or CDC pathway risk.
- Check the quick-glance figures — difficulty (separately for dogs and cats), quarantine risk, and estimated timeline.
- Open the full route guide — every row links to that country’s complete, sourced requirements.
- Follow the checklist — once you know your country’s specifics, International Pet Travel Checklist turns them into a week-by-week plan.

Browse by CDC Dog Pathway Risk
This is a genuinely different way to slice the same 34 countries — not just a repeat of the difficulty list above.
Only 9 countries carry any U.S. quarantine risk at all, and only for a foreign-vaccinated dog without a valid rabies titer: Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, UAE.
The other 25 countries carry no U.S. quarantine risk at all — and that list includes several countries rated “Moderate” difficulty above, like the UK, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Iceland, and New Zealand. Their Moderate rating reflects logistics friction (limited cargo airlines, strict origin-country export deadlines), not CDC rabies-risk classification. Don’t assume a Moderate difficulty rating means higher CDC risk — it often just means more paperwork on the origin-country side.
How We Rate Difficulty
These ratings are this site’s own editorial classification, not an official government scale — here’s what each one generally reflects:
- Easy: A low-risk-pathway country with straightforward paperwork, no titer requirement, and no U.S. quarantine risk.
- Moderate: Still no U.S. quarantine risk, but added friction somewhere else — commonly limited airline cargo options, a stricter or more involved origin-country export process, or a longer realistic timeline.
- Difficult: A dog on the high-risk CDC pathway (foreign-vaccinated, possible titer requirement and quarantine exposure), or a country with a substantial government export process of its own.
One thing worth separating out: difficulty and timeline are related but not the same measurement. Difficulty reflects how much process (paperwork, titer requirements, export steps) a route involves; timeline reflects how long that process realistically takes. A country can be rated Easy but still take 8–10 weeks simply because of how long routine steps take to complete in sequence — Ireland is a good example of this below — while a Moderate-rated country might move faster if its added friction is mostly about airline booking rather than a long waiting period.
Country-by-Country Quick Reference
Each row reflects that country’s own dedicated guide — click through for the full requirements, sources, and current details. Cats are rated Easy across every country on this list, since cats carry no federal rabies-vaccination requirement anywhere — the difficulty variation below is driven entirely by dogs’ CDC pathway and each country’s own export process.

Why Difficulty and Timeline Vary So Much
The pattern across every country above comes down to the same two things covered throughout this site’s guides: your pet’s species, and — for dogs — which CDC pathway applies based on where the dog has been and where it was vaccinated. Cats are consistently the simpler case across every country, since they carry no federal rabies-vaccination requirement regardless of origin. See Pet Relocation to the USA for the full explanation of what actually drives these differences.

Can’t Find Your Country? Start Here Instead
This index only covers countries with a dedicated route guide so far — it isn’t exhaustive. If your country isn’t listed, the general federal framework still applies regardless of origin: CDC‘s dog pathway system is based on a country’s rabies-risk classification, not on whether this site has written about it specifically.
